Cool or creepy?

I’m not sure if it’s the ultimate interactive nanny-cam or a somewhat creepy way you can spy on your employees; but the videoconferencing robot is here.

San Francisco telepresence firm HeadThere announced their Giraffe robot this week; a 35-pound 5’8 representation that allows you to be in two places at once, stairs and physical objects notwithstanding.

All joking aside, you can use this device to wander through your (single-level) house to find your kids, either watching over their shoulder as they do their homework, or shouting at them as they are scribbling in permanent marker on their blue jeans.

HeadThere also claims this product will make telecommuters feel more integrated into the company, by reminding their coworkers that they exist, and allowing them to engage in the office culture from afar.

I think the Giraffe looks a little too much like a disembodied floating head to allow that sort of comfort; but who knows? Perhaps we’ll all be working in our PJs someday, while our robots whirr around the office.
