The bad guys are consolidating their operations…

Symantec’s twice-yearly Internet Security Threat Report had interesting news from the botnet front.

The worldwide number of bot-infected computers rose — an increase of about 29 percent from the previous six months, to more than 6 million computers total — while the number of servers controlling them plunged. The number of such “command-and-control” servers declined by about 25 percent to around 4,700.

Symantec researchers said the decrease signifies that bot network owners are consolidating to expand their networks, creating a more centralized, efficient structure for launching attacks.

Talk about an impressive increase in efficiency. Never mind that it’s for nefarious purposes for a moment; imagine if you could reduce the number of servers in your company by 25% and at the same time increase your overall productivity by 29%!   We need to get the good guys thinking this way, too.
